This map shows why the headline price is a poor proxy. Hostinger publishes a cheap starter plan with visible CPU, RAM, and disk. IONOS exposes a dedicated-core compute unit, but the storage line has to be checked separately. Those are different buying motions.
Storage is not just disk size
Disk size is visible in many samples, but disk type and backup policy matter more once a site earns money. NVMe generally points to faster local storage than classic SSD, but the public plan line still does not answer restore speed, snapshot frequency, or cross-region durability.
Treat storage as a recovery question. A plan with generous disk but unclear backup pricing can be worse for a small shop than a narrower plan with a tested restore path. This is where you find the idle line item before it sits on the bill.
The clearest storage samples here are not always the most expensive. Crazy Domains shows 10 GB NVMe at $2.25, while Bluehost shows 125 GB NVMe at $49.99. Those numbers describe capacity and plan level; they do not prove equivalent isolation, support, or recovery behaviour.
Egress is the missing line to challenge
Egress is the traffic leaving the provider towards users, integrations, backups, or another cloud. It is often invisible in small-business hosting pages because providers bundle, cap, or describe it in separate acceptable-use terms.
That gap matters. Outbound traffic can turn growth into a surcharge, especially for media, downloads, APIs, cross-region backups, and CDN misses. If a provider does not make the allowance clear, ask before treating the monthly instance price as a budget.
Use the egress check as a go/no-go rule. A brochure that says scalable is not enough. You need the included transfer amount, the overage price, whether CDN traffic is counted separately, and what happens when backups leave the region.
Traffic signals help, but they do not replace cost data

Traffic is a discovery signal, not a hosting guarantee. A high-visibility provider can still be wrong for a workload with strict data residency, predictable egress, or restore-time requirements. A smaller regional provider can be a better fit when support and location matter more than brand reach.
When to choose cloud hosting
Choose cloud hosting when capacity needs to move and you can monitor the bill. It fits growing stores, agency portfolios, SaaS backends, staging environments, and applications that need regional placement without buying a dedicated server first.
Avoid it when the application is static, traffic is predictable, and the provider cannot explain the traffic policy. A plain VPS or managed WordPress plan may be easier to budget if the cloud offer hides backups, transfer, or storage expansion behind sales language.
